| The "Blizzard" of 2016 |
Hi, my name is Carrie Hibbs. I am currently teaching MTE, MTH 152, and MTH 163 online for the spring semester.
This semester is quite a busy one for me. I got married on 1/1/16... the date is very important to my husband and myself. The reason we chose this date, is because we are both math people and love numbers. My birthday is January 16th (1/16), my husband's is November 6th (11/6) and when he proposed he mentioned having a wedding on New Year's Eve, everyone likes to celebrate that day anyway :-) So the numbers worked for us, and we knew that would be the date we would always celebrate. I'm also spending this semester on bed rest, and am almost 7 months pregnant. I stay very busy with my online teaching, and this Enroll course.

I think my current knowledge, skills, and attitudes about teaching are always evolving. I really enjoy taking courses like this, because it helps keep my skills and attitude fresh about teaching. I think teachers should always take more courses and learn to adapt to new environments in their teaching. When I started teaching at a high school, I never would have expected to spend an entire semester teaching nothing but online classes at a college. Courses like these help me adapt and really connect to my students. I think to be a great teacher, you need to have that connection with students, which is a little hard to establish in an online environment. Blogs, comments, discussions, and feedback help students make these connections with their instructor and peers.
I think blogs are harder to use in a math class. I think I could try to start one as an alternate to weekly announcements I post in Blackboard. Announcements are one sided and only come from an instructor. Changing these to blogs, students would be able to comment and ask and respond to classmates questions whether they be about the topic of the week, or just clarification on due dates.
